Despite what many people think, you can really accomplish quite a lot even in a fairly small yard. While your options may be slightly limited by existing features there are a few quick and easy tips that might help you to accomplish what you really want from your space no matter how small. Here are a few of the best:

Decide What You Would Want If You Did Have A Larger Space

While not everything is possible, by deciding exactly what you really desire from your space, you just might be able to get it. Do you want a peaceful place to meditate or read a book?

A place for your morning tea? Or maybe an herb garden? Everyone is different. Knowing what you would really love to use your yard for, if you could, will help you not only brainstorm ideas but will help you to communicate accurately to a landscaping professional.

Hire A Professional

It sounds obvious but it is surprising how many people overlook this. Maybe it’s just that they don’t think they have too many options anyway and don’t want to spend the money, but it is a smart idea. Landscape designers work by the hour which means you might be able to use their expertise to help you get what you want.

What’s obvious to them may be news to the average homeowner. They often can work wonders in even very confined spaces to help you end up with the ideal result you desire or at least very close to it.

Think Vertically

While you might not have a ton of space on a horizontal plane, thinking vertically can put the space you do have to good use. There are many ways to add a decent amount of foliage even in narrow areas. Raised planters, vines, and trees which are both narrow and upright are all easy ways to accomplish this. Pedestals also are a good option.

Layers

Layering your plants is also a great way to give the appearance of depth. Flowers or shorter plants at the front with taller shrubs behind them always works. You can use a few layers but always remember to take the height that the plants will mature to when fully grown into consideration first.

Double Duty

When you have limited space being able to use features for more than one function is key. Walls can be used for seating, dining, and keeping potted plants for example. There is also quite a lot of modern outdoor furniture which can be used in this way too.

Many garden benches can be used not only for sitting but for storage and sometimes even as tables. Rattan garden furniture is worth looking into as well since it is lightweight and portable which allows you to have more freedom with your space.

Take these tips into consideration for your small yard and you may be able to get just as much or even more use out of it than one much larger in size. You can always add in a water feature to create a sense of movement.

And don’t overlook flooring patterns such as the diagonal tile pattern which will make it seem much wider than it really for even more of an effect. By deciding what it is you truly want, hiring a pro, thinking vertically, using layers along with features and furniture that have multiple uses you won’t believe what you can accomplish!
