Wood
Pergolas can be made from many different types of wood. However because they will need to stand up to the weather and outdoor extremes, there are a few wood types that are used much more often than others. Redwood, cedar, and pressure-treated wood are probably the most common options available because of their durability and attractiveness.
Since wood is a natural material it will require some care. That being said, with the right maintenance a high-quality wood pergola will provide years of use and make an eye-catching addition to any outdoor space.
Metal
Another material option is metal. Pergolas made of metal are very sturdy and will have a rust-free finish to prevent any rusting from rain or moisture. Metal structures can be modern, classic, or a blend of multiple styles. Metal options are typically made from aluminum, steel, or sometimes wrought iron.
Many pergola kits on the market are made from aluminum since it’s highly durable yet at the same time lighter in weight and more affordable than other metal choices.
Vinyl
Pergolas made of vinyl are designed to be maintenance-free. This makes them very appealing to many consumers. Just about the only thing they’ll require is an occasional spray down with the hose to keep them clean. And this manmade material is also totally weather and water-resistant. While a vinyl pergola may be tough it’s not going to be as durable as wood or metal.
But, they will normally cost less than other material choices. For added strength, some vinyl options are actually made from a composite material. This is typically a combination of vinyl and wood pulp. This can also help to give the pergola a more natural wood-like appearance but with the advantages of vinyl.
Natural Stone
Some structures like what’s known as a Tuscan pergola will have supports that are made from natural stone while the roof is made from wood. The supports are typically made to look like elegant columns and are often made from marble or limestone. Natural stone is not the only option for creating columns. They can be made from a stone composite material and fiberglass can be used as a less expensive stone-look alternative.
