Rheas are large flightless birds native to South America. These big grayish-brown birds are well-known for their long necks and for using their wings to help them balance and change direction when running. However, they are often confused with several other types of birds that have a similar appearance. So here’s a list of birds that look like rheas to help you tell them apart.

Ostrich

The ostrich is a rhea-like bird however it is much larger. While the rhea is the largest bird in South America, the ostrich is the largest bird in the world sometimes reaching heights of nine feet tall. The ostrich is native to Africa and has excellent eyesight which helps it to spot predators from long distances. There are two separate species of ostrich: the common ostrich and the Somali ostrich.

Emu

The emu is a long-necked flightless bird from Australia. This Australian icon is prominently featured on the coat of arms of Australia along with the kangaroo. While the emu is a bird that looks like a rhea at first glance, it is bigger and has shaggy-looking plumage. The emu is known to use its powerful legs to kick potential threats. And because its feet are equipped with sharp claws this can cause serious injury.

Cassowary

The cassowary is a shy bird that lives in the dense jungles of Indonesia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. While cassowaries are birds that look like rheas they have a totally unique-looking head that is brightly colored and has a casque on top.
