You don’t have to have a swing set or climbing structure to keep kids entertained or happy. In fact, many parents either don’t have the space or don’t like the look of them anyway. By adding a few simple elements you can create a space that is fun and friendly for the children but still has everything the grown-ups need.

Plants For Knowledge And Safety

Plants are an essential part of any garden or yard. Make sure there are none that could be poisonous for children; it’s never worth the risk. Thorny plants are also a good idea to avoid, as even if children know to stay away from them, accidents do happen.

Falling into a bush with thorns or simply reaching into one after a toy or ball is almost guaranteed to end in tears. Also, plants that have in-edible berries are not a good idea as not only can they be swallowed accidentally but are dangerous for other young friends who come over to play.

Instead, look for options that attract wildlife. A butterfly bush for example will not only have large long flowers that are incredibly attractive, but it is also fragrant and will be sure to lure a ton of butterflies with its nectar. They can make for a fun way to teach young children about nature too. Growing edible foods like vegetables is also another very educational option that can be delicious and does not require much space!

Water Features Have Many Benefits

Water features are a favorite of adults who love the relaxing sound they provide and are looked at in wonder by kids who enjoy splashing, touching, and playing with them. As long as they don’t pose a risk for them to fall into they can be an excellent choice for a child-friendly garden.

Wall and spill fountains are two options that many parents decide on because they generally don’t have enough water to pose any concern. An added bonus is that they can be used as a focal point, block out unwanted noise from the street or neighbors, and just look amazing.

Think Like A Child

Kids have very active imaginations and as a result, your garden will not be just a place to play but depending on what they are dreaming up could be a vast jungle, battlefield, or even another world. Having natural areas for young ones to build forts and even hide can make your garden even more of an experience for them.

They can play games like hide-and-seek, and really let their imaginations run wild. A paved pathway can also be an easy way to provide hours of endless fun for active kids who want to run, skate, or play any number of games.

They don’t even have to be that long, but they should have some grip to help prevent slips and falls. The more areas you have that can be used in a fun and safe way by your children the better, but they will always need at least one.

So don’t be dismayed if you are dealing with a confined space or simply turned off by the thought of converting your gorgeous garden into a playground. By adding a few or all of these elements to your garden space you’ll be providing your child with years of enjoyment and improving the look of your home at the same time, it’s a win-win situation!
