When choosing patio furniture there are many important factors to keep in mind.  Remembering the three S’s will help you to make the best choice the first time around.  Stability, scale, and space will help to guide you in the right direction when purchasing the furniture that your specific patio requires.

Stability

While it might be okay to have a little wobble in a patio bench the same is not true for an outdoor dining table. Deciding how stable your furniture needs to be and then purchasing furniture accordingly will help to ensure a comfortable outdoor session whether that means reading a book, enjoying a cup of tea, or hosting a dinner party.

While it seems fairly obvious that you need to take the material your patio is made of into consideration before deciding on what type of material of furniture to buy, it is a quite common mistake and one which can mean the difference between relaxation and annoyance.

For example, the thin legs of a wrought iron bistro set might not be so stable and therefore not a comfortable place to sit if placed on an uneven flagstone patio. However, the same set if it were used on a more level surface it could work perfectly.

So make sure you decide on furniture which will not have a problem remaining stable on the material your patio is made from. This is of major importance when choosing an outdoor patio table.

Scale

Another often overlooked concept is scale. It’s common to see patios overstuffed with all types of furniture which can really take away from its overall look and effect. You’re always better off having less than more if those are your options, yet the real goal is to cater to the scale of your own unique space creating a balance.

A mistake many homeowners make is to actually purchase a much bigger patio furniture set than they need and one that is actually too large for their patio space. This is often in anticipation of their annual party, barbeque, or some future event.

While it seems silly, a large number of patios cramped with furniture are the result of an overzealous host trying to provide extra seating for a once-a-year event and totally forgetting about the scale of their space in relation to its furniture.

Space

Don’t forget that whether you have a ton of guests or just a few everyone needs space to pull their chair out, stretch their legs, or walk around the table. In forgetting to purchase their patio furniture with regard to the scale of their space a cramped and uncomfortable patio area is the result.

A good rule of thumb is to always leave at least three to four feet of extra space around the perimeter of your patio furniture. Like stability, space is especially important when it comes to dining tables.

Using these three concepts to help you choose the right patio furniture will not only keep you from making some simple yet costly mistakes but also help to improve the look of your patio as well. So keep stability, scale, and space in mind and your patio will be sure to impress.
