Coffee Grounds Keep Cats Away

If you find that the neighborhood cats are treating your garden and yard like a personal litter box, it is time to use coffee grounds to keep cats away. You may wonder, “Will coffee grounds keep cats away?” The answer is yes, they will. This is not a myth or an old wives’ tale, and it works brilliantly. You will need to take a little effort to spread the coffee grounds regularly into the soil in your garden and parts of your outdoor area that the cats seem to fancy.

How Do Coffee Grounds Repel Cats?

Try to imagine waking up to the aromatic smell of freshly brewed coffee. The fragrance seems to invigorate the senses and is a great start to the day. Now what smells great to you smells quite different to feline creatures. Simply put, they detest the fragrance of coffee and keep away from places that reek of the smell.

A cat’s sense of smell is very important to it. They like to smell themselves, their surroundings, and most of all they like to smell other cats and animals close by. Cats and coffee grounds do not get along because for them the smell is too strong and pungent. It interferes with the way they can smell themselves and other things.

How To Use Coffee Grounds To Keep Cats Away

If you want to place coffee grounds in the garden to keep cats out, you will need to cool the grounds before you take them outdoors. Putting hot or warm coffee grounds on the topsoil around your plants can harm them. You may also wish to cool, dry, and collect the coffee grounds to spread them once or twice a week around your property.

Coffee Grounds Keep Cats Away

If you do not drink coffee or do not brew your coffee, do not worry, just ask a friend to collect the coffee grounds for you. You could also ask a neighborhood café if they could give them to you instead of throwing it in the trash.

Cats and coffee grounds do not go well together, but plants and coffee grounds do. By adding them to the topsoil you are offering the soil a natural fertilizer and adding nitrogen to it. You may also wish to put dried coffee grounds in your child’s sandbox to deter cats from wandering in.

It is a good idea to repeat this process for several weeks, or until the cats do not stop loitering in your outdoor space. Even after they stop visiting your garden and yard, you may want to continue adding coffee grounds to the soil as a preventive measure.

The fact that coffee grounds keep cats away makes it easy for you to discourage them from coming into your property. You do not need to buy a repellent or a device, all you need to do is regularly spread coffee grounds into the soil in your yard. Do remember to pay special attention to parts of the garden they seem to like.
